
Mark Walsh
Water Polo Head Coach
Mark Walsh has been a foundational figure in Santa Barbara High School athletics since 1992. As head coach of the Boys and Girls Water Polo teams and the Swim Team since 1997, Mark has led the program to 15 CIF Water Polo Championships, establishing SBHS as a powerhouse in aquatic sports.
Mark’s coaching journey is defined by his unwavering commitment to excellence, both in and out of the pool. A lifelong advocate for the development of young athletes, he focuses on fostering discipline, resilience, and teamwork, ensuring his players not only excel athletically but also grow as leaders and individuals. His ability to connect with students on a personal level has made him a respected mentor and educator.
In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Mark has served as a dedicated Physical Education teacher at SBHS for over two decades, inspiring countless students to lead healthy, active lives. His holistic approach to education combines physical fitness with character development, emphasizing respect, integrity, and perseverance.
Mark’s mentorship extends beyond the local level. He has coached Olympians such as Thalia Munro and Kami Craig, who have both achieved extraordinary success under his guidance.

Thalia Munro led Santa Barbara High School to three CIF Championships and went on to win three NCAA titles at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She also earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, showcasing her elite international caliber.

Kami Craig was instrumental in back-to-back CIF Championships at SBHS and continued her dominance at the University of Southern California (USC), where she earned NCAA Championship titles and All-Finalist honors. Kami’s international career is highlighted by three Olympic medals — two golds and one silver — underscoring her place among the sport’s elite.
Beyond these Olympians, Mark has developed countless athletes who have earned scholarships and competed at prestigious collegiate programs including Stanford University, University of Southern California, University of California Santa Barbara, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, University of California Irvine, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, San Diego State University, Pomona Pitzer College, Princeton University, and University of California Berkeley, among many others.
Known for his focus on discipline, resilience, and leadership, Mark prepares his athletes for success not only in the pool but in all aspects of life. His commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes has made him a lasting cornerstone of the SBHS aquatics community.
